Alaska Trip and Photos

I've spent some time this summer getting my photos online on picasaweb, and today I scanned a bunch from my trip to Alaska in the Summer/Fall of 2000.

Kennicott Mill Building

I spent the summer in Kennicott, an copper mining town from the early 1900's that is now mostly deserted. The copper ore was mined high up in the mountains and transported to the mill via a series of aerial trams, where it was processed and loaded onto a train for transport to Valdez. Below are pictures of two of the bunkhouses where the miners lived. On the left is the Jumbo mine bunkhouse, and on the right is the Erie mine bunkhouse. Imagine spending the winter in there!

I washed dishes at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge and did a lot of backpacking and mountain biking. In September, a friend and I bought an old Dodge Ram pickup and drove around 3000 miles from Anchorage to Oregon via the Cassiar highway.

You can see the rest of the Alaska photos here. I plan to scan and upload some more photos in the next few weeks, including some from a backpacking trip I took to New Mexico in Spring 2002.
